Road Test
A Shore Thing - The Breakwater
WORDS BY Elle Holland
Hot on the heels of success, The Breakwater at Hillarys Boat Harbour has undergone a major rebuild, leaving its past behind. As I sit here at the Ishka restaurant taking coffee with proprietor Sean Reid I can see that he is one happy man; like a kid in a candy store standing in his brand spanking new hotel situated on the burgeoning coral coast slap bang overlooking the glistening Indian Ocean. His enthusiasm is understandable because, from where I am sitting, there is definitely no shortage of patrons at this fine eatery.
My initial feeling as I walked the wharf towards the Breakwater to meet with Sean was ‘gobsmacked’. My first glimpse of the exterior of the building was exhilarating. Sean then informed me that the hotel had received the Australian Institute of Architecture Award for commercial building excellence and a commendation for interior design. The interior’s sleek fit-out and cutting edge beauty is colossal and a huge draw card, along with stunning water views from every area of the hotel. The two-storey venue has been shrewdly designed to accommodate a multitude of functions at one time. The main bar on the lower deck level has a great bar scene and ambience that welcomes clientele to take in the racy atmosphere. The contemporary decor and funky striped chairs set the mood for an ideal place to chill with friends as the resident DJ weaves a laid back vibe. Choose from a large selection of refreshing boutique beers and iconic wines.

Lower Bar & Deck
Having done so myself, I highly recommend heading to the lower deck main bar as an easy relaxed option for a small to medium gathering, be it a special occasion or just to indulge with a group of friends or colleagues. By request the friendly staff will arrange an area within the happening bar for you to entertain that provides your own space yet still allows you to experience the surroundings. They will also cater to your culinary requirements with a selection of delightful canapé and finger food platters.
Akoya Suite
For a more formal occasion, such as a corporate event, wedding, engagement party or even a business meeting, whether it is a large or intimate affair, consider the cultivated Akoya Suite on the upper level. The suites are private and incredibly stylish; the moodiness of the charcoal coloured décor and eye-opening Swarovski-bejewelled chandeliers create an impact setting. When you finally lift your jaw, cast an eye over the clinquant ocean views and magnificent leisure boats that are moored in the harbour below. Quite a talking point or ice breaker if you like, for any event. The Akoya suite accommodates up to 160 guests at one time for a sit down meal. The packages are varied and designed to suit most budgets. The breakfast suite package starts from as little as $30 per head. Conference luncheons can be arranged from $36 per head. They offer an excellent all day package for a minimum of 20 guests for $55 per head that begins with morning tea and ends with afternoon tea. Include the million dollar views and luxurious surroundings and you will be battling to beat that value. The Akoya is a perfect location for your wedding reception. Again, packages are designed to suit your needs, and Hillarys Boat Harbour has a range of dynamic spots to accommodate your wedding photos.
